sun shadow volume - earth's horizon

In a project we use Sun Shadow Volume (3D Analyst). For a scientific evaluation of the results, we need more detailed information about the calculation basis of the tool. Concretely, we are interested in the field VERT_ANGLE. How is the earth's horizon determined and taken into account?

Does anyone have more information? Or can tell me whom I can turn to?
