Don't want to 'load page over secure connection'

I'm using the Map Journal Story Map and I cannot uncheck the "Load page over a secure connection (HTTPS)"

I am not sure why this is since in my https://community.esri.com/community/gis/web-gis/arcgisonline?sr=search&searchId=14203dc6-90e6-4af2-... organizational settings, the security is set to uncheck the "allow access to the organization through HTTPS only"

Please advise why my options are restricted.

Thanks,

Adrian

Hi Adrian,

Even if your organization is set to allow HTTP, you may still be loading your story over HTTPS. Can you check in the address bar to see if that is the case?

That box should be checked on but disabled (meaning you can't interact with it) if you are currently viewing the story over an HTTPS link. Since you are loading your story over HTTPS you can't attempt to load your embedded web content over HTTP. If your website doesn't work it's likely that it restricts embedding.

As a side note, for the upcoming release (Dec 13, 2016) we've revised that note to simplify the help we provide and link out to this blog post for more info if you want the gory details about web security.

Owen,

I appreciate the reply. My URL of the story map does have https in it, though it is through my ArcGIS Online organization, not hosted on a server. Is there a way to change that? Even if I force it to 'http', it still does not load this allegedly un-secure content (and most of my un-secure sites are all esri.com based, which is a little disheartening!).

In any case, I feel like the security issues are deeper here than just saying 'http' based sites won't load. Wouldn't all esri.com based sites have the potential to load into a story map?

Adrian -- are you able to share a link to your story and the sites you are trying to embed so I can check them out?

There's more info in that blog that may help you understand the security issues (there are actually several at play here, which is why things are tricky).

Owen,

It's kind of a weird story map. It was initially intended to demonstrate GIS capabilities to upper management where I work (just internally). But, now another company wants to show their upper management what GIS can do, so the map journal has been modified to be a little more generic but not much.

Here is the map:

http://arcg.is/1RXvr5j

These two sites were hit and miss, meaning they would sometimes show, but other times would not:

ArcGIS for Server | GIS Web Server Software | Web Map Server

ArcGIS for Server

I have taken them out and put in one that hopefully shows continually.

This blog post that I wrote does not show:

Also, I tried embedding this story map, but the 3D web scenes do not appear in the embedding (but will when opened by itself):

Thanks for your help Owen.

Edit: In any case, I took out all the problematic sites and put in ones that appear to work all the time.
