When I attempt to add the GIS server to the Portal as a federated server it returns an error stating "ArcGIS Server is already a federated server".

There are currently no servers listed.

Hi Kyle,

As the Portal is a new portal, it should not have references to the server. However, if you did not unfederate Server, it will still believe it is a federated server. You need to update server so it no longer thinks it is federated. To do this:

1. Go to https://<server machine name>:6443/arcgis/admin
2. Navigate through Security > Config

   - Here you will see that it still reads 'ARCGIS_PORTAL'

3. Update this page so the 'Authentication Tier' is 'GIS_SERVER'

This should resolve the issue you are seeing and allow you to federate your server with the portal.

Is it an upgrade from previous version? And was the server site un-federated from Portal before the upgrade?

We attempted to upgrade from 10.4.1 but it didn't work. We uninstalled and removed Portal directory before installing. The server wasn't un-federated, I've looked for a remnant but can't find anything.

Did you check in the ArcGIS Portal administrator directory (https://webadaptor.domain.com/arcgis/portaladmin)

Check the steps here Removing an ArcGIS Server site from your portal

Yes, I checked the admin directory, no federated servers show up. There's nothing to remove.

Edit: sorry, just read the last two comments...guess you already tried this.

I had an issue with Portal thinking I still had a web adaptor installed when I upgraded from 10.5 prerelease, and tech support helped me find where I could look and delete it.  Portal has an admin page in the browser, similar to ArcGIS Server.  I see there is a tab in there for Federation. Mine is blank, but if it follows suit with my web adaptor issue, you may see something in your that you can delete.  Proceed with caution, or ask tech support if needed, but it may be pretty obvious (if it shows here).https://dfgancgis10dev:7443/arcgis/portaladmin/

https://<portal machine name>:7443/arcgis/portaladmin/

For me, I use just the machine name, not the fully qualified domain name, but try that if you have issues getting in.

This is done on the ArcGIS server machine.

Very helpful! Just had to reinstall Portal and federate AGS again after some server name changes. It was weird to see now servers listed under 'Federated Servers', yet not be able to Add them.

Now, however, I'm getting an error about 'Failed to validate the server managed database' when setting one of my federated machines as Hosting Server. I had left that AGS alone while only re-installing Portal.

Any pointers? (realize this is an old thread)
