Why is it that I don't seem to be able to checkout from an sde version other than default?

I can checkout from my sde geodatabase successfully in my DEFAULT version but when I am in a child version, my checkouts don't work. I go through the same process to checkout. I tested it on one layer and that layer didn't succeed. It works in default. Why doesn't it work in other versions?
