I have followed the steps in Combining a hillshaded DEM with a scanned map—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop to produce a hillshade scanned map. However, the output of the map is rather dark due to the gray scale effect of hillshade. Is there a way to reduce the gray scale effect of hillshade? I tried Learn a New Method for Displaying Hillshades and Elevation Tints | ArcWatch but i have problem downloading a colour map.

Thank you.

a screen grab of your image might help if you followed the suggestions in both/.  If you produced the hillshade yourself, you could vary the azimuth and zenith angle used to produce the hillshade from their default values of 315 and 45 respectively or play with the

(TOPO + hillshade DEM) / 2

to see if a different division value or a slightly different equation helps
