I am trying to create a mosaic dataset from the tiled imagery that was given to us by our County, but I am having trouble cleaning up some of the grids that show a red transparent overlay or black background.  I haven't had much luck with the repair function or using the imagery analysis window.  I have minimal knowledge with working with imagery and was hoping someone here will have some input.  I have cross-posted this in the Managing Data Forum too.

In the case of the red tiles, it looks like your pyramids may have been corrupted.  If you load those single tiles into the map and zoom out to this scale, do they still look red and/or partially black?  Try rebuilding pyramids on the individual raster tiles.  (If I am correct, it's not transparent red, but the LOSS of the green and blue bands in the reduced resolution pyramids.)

If these tiles appear red at ALL scales, even zoomed in to full resolution, then your source data was corrupted.  If the source tiles look fine and this is only happening at reduced resolution in your Mosaic Dataset, then your reduced resolution Overviews were corrupted - try rebuilding overviews and be sure to de-select "Generate Missing Only".

At a higher level if you want to learn more you can start at http://esriurl.com/ImageManagement, and look for the workflow and sample data (2 downloads) for "Preprocessed Orthophotos" here http://www.arcgis.com/home/group.html?id=b65f2601e0084e32afab3eb488fa8a67&q=preprocessed%20ortho&t=g...
