A few years ago, Aileen showed how to make a beautiful whitewash map with this post: Figure-ground: Whitewash | ArcGIS Blog
This uses a wonderful cartographic technique to make a washed out effect map. Was wondering if someone in the community could show me how to make a make a map like the one I've attached here using the same technique. Would appreciate all the effort. All help is welcome.

have you gotten to the point of creating the mask layer? or are you having difficulties in general. The instructions are pretty good, but generic, so you would have to equate a step with a tool or procedure to complete it.
Thank you for responding Dan. Yes, I know how to do layer masks. But just can't go any further than that to come even closer to the example I attached with the post. I think after the map was created in ArcGIS, the person used Photoshop to enhance its visualization. But even then, I wish to make a similar map. Help anyone?
