How do I create a unique ID for each asset type? A GIS staff from contract emailed me this "All GIS is in and I have set up the work item linking for those layers that had a unique ID field. I would recommend that you create a unique ID for each asset type so that you can track work to all (needed) assets."  I can't find information. I am not sure if this is the right group. Please assist me in this matter. Thank you

Hi Alexis,

Not really sure if I understood your question, sorry if my answer has nothing to do with it.

Reading Unique ID makes me thing about Global ID:

Have a look at it:

(Global Identifiers paragraph)

They told me that just want to make sure that the field for “Name” uses unique identifiers, that way each asset item has it’s own ID. Does that make sense?

Hi Alexis,

I would recommend looking into the Attribute Assistant for ArcGIS Desktop. This will enable you to develop a rule that you create a unique identifier field and every time you add an item it add 1 or whatever increment you want to apply to the unique identifier. Here at my City, we use it for our Addressing and ever address has a Site Address ID which is a unique value like SID-(insert sequence number here). They have excellent documentation here.

As a note, this functionality will be known as attribute rules in ArcGIS Pro. They mentioned that at the UC this functionality should be coming out soon and would be platform wide, not just in ArcMap.

I need to have a look ad this add-in and I am sure is going to be of a great help for my future tasks.

One thing that I forgot to mention is that this Add-In does not support a versioned environment because the table cannot be versioned. Therefore if you create addresses or assets in a version, while it will create the unique string for the id, when you push that version live, you will have duplicates. The work around that we have found is that we create the addresses in the version and assign them SID numbers but then we go back to the table and adjust what the next value would be. I hope that makes sense
