I have had that happen to me and I ended up recreating the shapefile. How are you creating the shapefile? Is the shapefile in its own folder? If its not, move it in to its own.
If you are using ArcGIS 10 editing environment with feature templates, maybe you'd find this post useful.
It is a possible reason, but let us know if it does not help you.
Could you provide the sequence of actions you are performing when starting editing a shapefile? Can you create an empty map document, add this shapefile either via Catalog window or by using the Add Data tool?
You might check the consistency of the shapefile - it can be corrupted as well.
I've been able to duplicate this, where the shapefile does not show in the Create Feature window when you start editing. By moving the shapefile in to its own folder and then bring it back into the MXD it then shows up in the Create Feature window and is able to be edited. It sounds like a bug.
Bob, that worked. I created a new folder in Catalog, put the new shapefile into the folder, then opened the folder and dragged the shapefile into the map. My point shapefile now contains points.
Thanks for your reply. I tried Bob's suggestion of creating a new folder and putting the shapefile in the folder, and that worked.
