For my final year project at University I???m undergoing an investigation into Internet GIS and its involvement within disaster response.  For my investigation I'm going to use ArcGIS Online has anyone got any ideas on how I could illustrate the advantages and disadvantages as much help as possible would be appreciated.

Well, here are a few ideas off the top of my head. You may have thought of these already.

  • ArcGIS Online provides a way for disparate agencies to come together and share maps and services through groups.

  • Web maps can be created and easily distributed to the public. Web maps can be embedded in other web pages, so people viewing it don't have to know anything about ArcGIS Online. For example, a web map could provide information about the event as well as relief efforts.

  • Apps can be built that incorporate social media, like twitter. http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=53ae8b9591b0470885f820ea47cc9f45

Hi Mike, thats great help thanks basically I need to do an implmentation stage then conclude my findings etc.  I was having a look at the social media application this I feel is very useful and is relevant with todays society which is facebook crazy.  Could you please tell me how I could upload etc on to this map as I live in the UK and arent familiar with this app.

I'm not really familiar with the particular application I pointed you to. I just found it by doing a search. However, if you scroll down on the item details page, you'll see that you can download the code to run the sample.

Alternatively, you could make your own web map in arcgis.com using one of the out of the box templates called "chrome twitter". Here's the app pointing at a different web map. In this app, you can basically type a search string and it does a twitter search.
