I??m publishing from a 10.1 Amazon EC2 server.

I??ve created a service definition from a map document in ArcMap (installed on the server machine).  When I try to publish that service definition from the Manager, I get the following error:

KernModel.KernResults.GPServer: ERROR: service failed to start, Cannot connect to this server

The logs:
SEVERE Mar 7, 2013 11:59:19 AM Unable to add Map Server configuration. KernModel/KernResults.GPServer
SEVERE Mar 7, 2013 11:59:15 AM Services containing process crashed. KernModel/KernResults.MapServer instance has crashed. Server
WARNING Mar 7, 2013 11:59:15 AM IgnoreCache property not found. KernModel/KernResults.MapServer
WARNING Mar 7, 2013 11:59:15 AM CacheOnDemand property not found. KernModel/KernResults.MapServer
WARNING Mar 7, 2013 11:59:15 AM IsCached property not found. KernModel/KernResults.MapServer

I can create map services without problem.

This example was most similar to mine:

Solution:  I needed to make the output of the model a model parameter.  Although I had checked "Add to Display,"  this only works when the tool is run from within the Model Builder Environment.  It doesn't work when the model is run from the dialog window.

More info on this here: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//002w0000007v000000
