I have exactly Dave's question and further info on the workflow I followed: 1) I shared a non-editable hosted feature service (FS) with a group that has editing rights. I'm in that group. 2) I added the above FS to a web-map using the 'Add layer to new map with full edit editing control' suggested in the help excerpt above. Since I'm within the group that has editing rights: I'm able to edit this feature service in this instance of the web-map. So far so good. 3) I saved the web-map (with the editable FS) and shared it with the group that has edit rights. I did this from the folder that the FS lives in, with the share option 'Access and update capabilities'. 4) I created a web-app (using app builder) from the above web-map. Tried to add editing widgets. This is where things grind to a halt. The edit widgets CANNOT be configured because the web-map does NOT show any editable layers! It seems like the editability of that un-editable FS seemed to only persist for the current web-map and couldn't be saved. Not even when i went back to the saved web-app and shared THAT with the editable group (thinking that maybe the app needs to inherit those edit rights as well). No deal. This is a severe obstacle as I need to give batch edit tools to my non-GIS user and that is only available through a web-app widget. If the web-map can't hold the 'editable' quality of the FS then the web-app (that consumes it) can't see it as editable data and the 'Batch edit' widget can't be configured. Help anyone?!!

We are in the same position Andrew: much is achieved by editing via Collector and viewing via web-maps. Editing via the web-map is an important functionality to have but I'm more thrown by the inability to symbolize based on related fields as it degrades the efficiency of Collector. I've always set my crews up with data where the feature changes color based on a 'Visit_complete' field that shows whether or not data has been collected for that feature. It lets them track not only their own work, but work of other crew whoa might be nearby in the field, simultaneously editing the data. Now that they can collect into a related table, we need to similarly indicate progress via that table. Really hope ESRI can get on this functionality soon. Any workarounds known to anyone to allow this kind of symbology?

Jacob, do you know when that's coming? (I mean, the ability to edit related tables through a web-map) Somewhat related (pun intended), do you know when we'll be able to symbolize features in web-maps on related data?

If you published it as a service from your desktop...you needed to have added the related table to your map document (along with the feature dataset it relates to) before publishing it as a hosted feature service. Just in case you missed that key step.

Thanks for asking my question and so succinctly. Any updates on this as of July 2015? My (very similar) situation: I have a SDE database hosted on a server, accessed and edited primarily through the Collector app and AGOL web-maps. Security has been enabled on the server SDE data (with just one set of credentials) and 'Editor tracking' enabled for the Feature service created from that SDE data. My need: To record the AGOL credentials of each editor who edits the data. It helps me identify which of my many field workers have collected each piece of data...each collector has an AGOL account. (They are required to also enter initials after each field entry but human error creeps in and they often skip the step...editor tracking is a safety net) Problem: When edited (in Collector app or in web-map or on the desktop), the editor tracking fields capture the credentials for the SDE log-in (of which there is currently only one) but not the AGOL credentials that would help me identify which individual in fact, edited. It used to work perfectly in the past when my data was hosted rather than in SDE/on a server. Possible solutions: The suggestion of multiple credentials on the SDE security is a good idea, but very clunky to set up. Keen to hear any suggestions ASAP. Thanks.

Of course. 🙂 That app doesn't fully address our needs though (rather, it has bells and whistles we may not want to pay for) so I'd like to see what other closer solutions exist. Right now, I've only tried out the free ESRI apps that i get when I go to make an app from a web-map in AGOL...was wondering if there are others like that anywhere else. I take it that's it for freeware? Will definitely do the free trial as you suggest. The annual cost might still be more cost-efficient than contracting out for a solution (since we don't have much app development skills in-house).

Thanks Andy. This looks like a wonderful resource though the price tag is fairly steep. It gets to my goal of capturing information from the public using a map and using it in AGOL to follow a workflow. Are there any ESRI free apps that come anywhere close to this? Where do I go to browse the various free apps for downloads? Thanks in advance!

This is excellent Jake! Only I would need to tweak it to check for changes in certain fields + changes since the last time it was checked....which might just be daily (so changes in the last 24 hours instead of 1). Could you tell my the syntax for setting up those queries (or point me to resources)? Also, I'm not sure where to run this code from. I'm a bit familiar with Python but this doesn't look like it. A few pointers please on how to run this? Thanks much!

Vince: I'm asking the same question only I want to be emailed/notified only when a point is added to a hosted feature service. The addition of a point marks the start of a workflow in my project and I want to be notified so that I can launch a particular workflow.I'm not talking of a versioned database...just a simple hosted File Geodatabase. Can you clarify HOW to set up email notification without the postgresq solution outlined below?

Is it possible to have an email sent (to a list of recipients) whenever a point is added to a hosted File GDB on a public web-app? The idea is to originate a permit application process from a web-map/app: applicants can add a point for the location they need a permit for, enter their information and apply for a permit (of particular kind). An email alerts officials that a permit has been applied for. The rest of the approval process flow from there and the hosted data is used to collect applicant information (including location for permit) as well as flag the status of the application as it makes its way through various stages of the approval process. Any ideas on how to have edits trigger emails?

Thanks Jake. If the rest tools will let me make edits in the hosted feature itself, that's half the battle won! I need to run some python on the 'shape' field and make schema changes...can I do this via this package? There's no help on it and i need some guidance to figure out how to use this. I pinged out ESRI rep here (Boston) about this issue and he ran into an error trying to make a REST replica of my data too, though he's been able to in the past when my process has failed due to slow network speed. His error was about exporting attachments (all the points in this db have photo attachments). Any suggestions? How do i use the REST package to download?

I have been using the 'Collector' app to add to a hosted File GDB of points with attachments. It's worked wonderfully (Jeff Shaner from ESRI has been invaluable help!) and I'm at a point now where I need to download the now huge data so I can make schema changes. It's around 40 MB (the attachments are photographs and add up) and the only way to download it successfully is using the REST method. It has worked well in the past using the method listed in this article:Getting Attachments down from ArcGIS Online — Cloudpoint Geographics Inc. However I am now repeatedly getting this error: Urgent need to get this off the cloud to use it. Any advice?
