WOW. That would have done it. just tried it and it worked. I guess it works out okay though because doing it the other way I will be able to edit the individual wells easier. Thanks for the help though!

I could not get the Xacto tool to work correctly but I did figure out a way to make the wells. I downloaded Fox_tools split by attribute tool. I ran the tool to sort the points into different files based on their API number. Then i used the model builder with an iterator to run through the folder with all of the wells and do the points to line tool on them.

I know this seems like a simple question, I get how to use the points to line tool for most things but I cant get it to work for this. I am trying to map out a lot of wells. Each well spot has a lat/long and elevation for its starting position on the surface as well as for its end point underground. It gets tricky because the file has about 2,000 wells, so it would be hard to separate them out into one file for each well. Does anyone know of a way to get it to connect the points from each well and show it going down into the subsurface. I am using ArcScene. Thanks for any help -Rob

Please help! I think I made a BIIIIG mistake. The company I work for wants to do some 3-D mapping and put me in charge since i am the only one here who knows how to use ArcGIS. When discussing the software the boss never said that he wanted it to run from the network server so that other workers could get on if need be. Well I ordered the software and was installing it this morning when the boss came in and asked why I was installing it on my machine and not on the server. I purchased the ArcGIS desktop advanced single use term licence from this page as well as all of the extensions. Esri Store: Browsing Desktop Subscriptions So I am wondering if there is a way to install and run the program from a network server, or did I just waste a large chunk of company money? Thnanks -Rob

Is there a way to do this but to keep the other fields with the data? this is working to get the FIDs that I need but then I lose the Owner of the lease.

Or maybe a simpler way of putting it, would be that for Each FID I need it to show the owner name associated with the newest date

I am working with some data for property leases in Texas, some of the areas have historic data where it will show all of the owners of the property so when i try and label it some areas will have several names over them. I need to get it to ownly show the newest set of data for each property. The data has an expiration date on the lease for each owner and the leases are connected through a common FID. I was thinking about trying to a definition query to get the latest data out but I cant think of a way that it would work. Any help would be REALLY appreciated. Thanks -Rob

Thank you, I think standard is what they will need, I would just hate to tell them to spend more money than they need to since it is a pretty small company!

Hello all, I am currently doing some consulting work for a petroleum company as a geotech. They know that I took arcgis classes in college and assume that i know everything about the software, which I do not. They want to start using Arcgis to make maps with wells (points) and pipelines (lines). I looked through a sheet explaining the difference between the three versions of Arcgis desktop, http://www.esri.com/~/media/Files/Pdfs/library/brochures/pdfs/arcgis1021-desktop-functionality-matrix.pdf I really do not think that the company will need advanced because from what I understand the main difference is that advanced has coverage geoprocessing which I do not think will be needed. Besides making basic maps they want to be able to do coordinate transformations from NAD 27 to WGS 84. I think that would be possible in the basic version but I am not positive. If anyone can provide me with some insight on the topic or give examples of what other oil and gas companies use the software for I would really appreciate it! Thanks -Rob

I have a tool that runs through an excel document, and gets lat, longs and depths to plot horizontal wells, when it runs it splits the wells into different files based on the Unique Well ID, i am wondering if anyone knows an easy was to run through a folder and rename them based off of the well name. I cant sort them by well name because some wells have the same names. Any ideas? Thanks -Rob Party

i had a point layer that i was clipping, but i made a polygon layer to clip it. right click on your geodatabase and select new feature class and give it a name and make the type Polygon Features, then when you start editing make sure that the feature class is selected and you should be able to draw a polygon!

I am looking and cant find anywhere that says that the editor toolbar is only available in certain levels of ArcGIS licensing. I would try going into the customize menu and select extensions and put a check by any of them that you can, it might help. I am running the 60 free trail and i know it comes with a bunch of extra stuff, but it think the tool bar should work in the standard version.

What version of ArcGIS do you have? and is the word Editor on the tool bar grayed out? if its not, select start editing and select your polygon layer and that will make the rest of the tool bar selectable.
