I would like a reader for ArcGIS Pro packages and projects, that I could use to share read-only content with friends and neighbors. I think this would fill a niche (offline access by opening a package, client side, perhaps offline). It is capabilities are too good not to share!

(1) You can get the geography data from the census bureau's pages, visit https://www.census.gov/geo/maps-data/data/tiger.html/ and look for block groups, and counties for New York. You can retrieve shapefiles or geodatabase layers from that resource. [Edited to add this correction: visit Geography - U.S. Census Bureau for shapefiles and geodatabase content] (2) I would recommend the American Communities Survey (ACS) data if you want recent data you can cite (at this date probably the July 1st estimates for 2014, I have not checked to see if the 2015 estimates are available as yet)--unless there is a requirement that you use PL data from the 2010 census. Both are available from the census bureau's web site, http://factfinder2.census.gov. A guided search will have you find county-level population estimates in a first step and in a second step, allocation to "All counties ["within New York" in this case]. Retrieve the result table and working in ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro, join it to your shapefile (I would recommend file-based geodatabase as a more robust option for storing the counties or block groups). In rendering the map you can normalize total population by area to produce an up-to-date map. This approach involves a little work, but avoids the vagaries of looking for a prepared dataset or map, which may be out-of-date or based on data other than census 2010 or the 2014 July 1st estimates. best regards -caminante (Austin, Texas)

the layers are variatons on a theme--multiple demographic views of census data, in a single online map (end users turns layers on and off as needed). Is there a limitation on the number of layers one can put in an ArcGIS Online map? The thing I'm working with now would have 26 layers but it looks as if I am colliding with a limitation--the tracts layer I just created and published won't add correctly to my map, leaving me to wonder if I have not reached a limit.

Thanks! Mystery resolved, that explains it. I developed the JavaScript and CSS working with later versions, for ArcGIS Online. That has been kept current, references v. 3.14 and works perfectly. Portal for our version of ArcGIS (10.2.2) was brought in later. So (for example) a message to the effect that color.js is not found (error 404) makes sense, as it is consistent with the fact that esri/Color was added at 3.9. Of course, it would help if I could persuade our own support staff to let us go ahead and work with 10.3.1. best regards here

All the apps we've done so far implement the CDN--this one is exceptional in that we're working with Portal instead of ArcGIS Online. I will follow your suggestion and find out what version we have, and whether we should replace the library with version 3.14. thanks -r.w.

I'm just now working with a new ESRI book, "Getting to Know Web GIS", by Pinde Fu. The examples and exercises contain references and tasks don't match what I have (I installed the SDK, also v. 1.1). Is there a more recent version available that might mach the exercises presented in this book? I've been able to puzzle it out so far, but don't want to wander too far afield.

I have an ArcMap project with several themes--each a different choropleth map based on census ACS data--that show different views of the same place--well, Texas. I plan to publish to ArcGIS Online and later, to Portal. What is the best way to get the same result in ArcGIS Online? I guess this is really a question about its behavior. 1. just upload the entire ArcMap document. Since there are multiple references to the same local feature class, is AGO smart enough to recognize that and only store a single copy of the feature class online (i.e. multiple renderings of the same service); or would it store multiple copies of the same data (one for each theme, obviously something I want to avoid). 2. load a single theme and use it as a template, to create multiple layers in an online map, forcing only one feature service that can be referenced from many contexts. I guess the question here is whether, if I follow (1) above, I will end up storiing multiple versions of the block group layer in ArcGIS Online, where one would do?

I have administrator privileges as an organization member, but am not the Portal administrator who sets up Server and the Portal software themselves--also, I should have mentioned that this is 10.2.2 I nevertheless appreciate your reply! thanks -robert

Are you referring to false easting? If measuring in linear distance (meters, feet) this can have the effect of making coordinate values smaller, giving a little more precision and making arithmetic a little easier. Our organization implements a Lambert Conformal Conic projection that subtracts 1,000,000 meters from values for UTM meters. I have encountered this same issue in a modified version of the basic viewer and associate with a widget in Web AppBuilder that writes a set of selected records to a .csv file. These worked in Chrome, and Firefox but not in Internet Explorer v. 11. I discovered that reverting security setting to default values fixed the problem. But, this is only a guess!
