Hi Alicia, The most common reason for what you are experiencing is that something configured in your app is not shared publicly. You app may be, the webmap may be, but also ensure that all data layers that are part of that webmap are also shared publicly. It looks like this layer is your culprit. You do not have access to this resource: https://www.arcgis.com/sharing/rest/content/items/8e57836787e94ef68211485dbf00ccf1/data

Hi David - yes that was the most common 'incorrect' response when asking for status, I think there was one other that I'd occasionally see but I'll have to capture it next time I run through the sequence (which I plan to do after making my initial web map more complicated). I sometimes see this as well.

Thanks Paul. The only thing that still has me scratching my head is where the output from the CREATE map area items live. Once the area is SETUP I have new items in my content ... but the item ID resulting from CREATE doesn't live in my content. I checked the web map JSON thinking maybe it was embedded there (nope). Where do the "CREATED" map areas live? Is there an API call to get a list of the (up to 16) created map areas (or those that have actually been setup for that matter) that have been defined for a particular web map? Everything else was reasonably discoverable once I got the API flow right but that still has me scratching my head. Cam

I've successfully gone through the entire end-to-end a couple of times now. For those approaching this for the first time a couple of important things to note. 1. These APIs don't (yet) support multi-part form (body) style submission ... you must use actual parameters. This had me going around in circles for a while. 2. The check job status calls will often return garbage, try again a couple more times and you'll see an actual status 3. Ensure the token you are using is a user token that has access to the web map or is an admin. I started out trying to use an app specific token but the job couldn't access my web map. I ended up just logging into may organizational AGOL account and capturing my token using Fiddler 4. Start simple with a base-map-only web map, you can add more feature data to your web map once you get the end-to-end flow working 5. The overall 'flow' I ended up with was: CREATE map area Check job status on CREATE Retrieve results for CREATE SETUP created map area Check job status on SETUP Retrieve results on SETUP (optional but I wanted to test them) REFRESH map area package Check job status on REFRESH Retrieve results on REFRESH

This was super helpful. Thank you Paul. I know naming is deucedly hard ... you might want to consider DEFINE map area > BUILD map area > REFRESH map area (rather than CREATE > SETUP > REFRESH )

Raúl Jiménez Ortega I've read through the documentation several times at: Create Map Area—ArcGIS REST API: Packaging Service | ArcGIS for Developers Setup Map Area—ArcGIS REST API: Packaging Service | ArcGIS for Developers Refresh Map Area Package—ArcGIS REST API: Packaging Service | ArcGIS for Developers Q1: These APIs currently work against ArcGIS Online, not yet against Portal for ArcGIS Enterprise. Correct? Q2: I'm struggling to understand the differences between Setup Map Area and Create Map Area. Can you explain? Q3: Is there an intended flow where all three of these APIs are to be used together? e.g. Setup > Create > Refresh? I'm about to embark on some proof of concept work, but a high-level understanding before starting would be GREAT Cam Barnard

Hi Kyle - I've seen this before in Chrome and possibly in another browser. It generally ONLY happens if you are using the in-browser zoom feature. If you Re-open Chrome, load this same map, and hit Ctrl-0 to reset your zoom to 100% you should find this artifact disappear. We ultimately determined that there wasn't anything we could do about it since different browsers treat the in-browser zoom differently. Cam

I didn't have any trouble changing the ArcGIS Online URL to point at my organization. I was able to sign in using a 'standard' ArcGIS Online account that is linked to my organization (that has a username and password) ... BUT I couldn't find any option to sign in using our Enterprise managed SAML (single sign on) accounts. e.g. Set up enterprise logins—ArcGIS Online Help | ArcGIS Am I correct in assuming that ArcGIS Earth doesn't (yet) support this? Thanks in advance. Cam

I got the impression from Esri at the 2015 Partner Conference & Developer Summit in Palm Springs, CA that this was going to be coming to ArcGIS Online as integrated, available, premium content. I'd love to find our more of what and when as street level imagery is a common request from customers.

At 10.3 your ArcGIS Server license comes with Portal including at least a 5 named users (for Standard ... more for Professional). Portal with your named users can be used to drive Collector. See this blog post for additional information: What's new in ArcGIS 10.3 for Server | ArcGIS Blog

Hi Heath, It may help to clarify your intent. Is your concern 'macro' in terms of catastrophic infrastructure failure? ... ArcGIS Online should be taking care of that level of redundancy and protection without conscious need for you to think about it. Is your concern 'macro' in terms of someone accidentally deleting the entire feature service? ... if so then cloning the service into your private area at some interval might do the trick. Is your concern 'micro' in terms of how to undo a specific erroneous edit on the part of a particular user? Other may be able to provide a more specific response if you nudge us in the right direction. -Cam

Hello Eikman, I found the free courses offered by Esri an excellent introduction to GIS and the ArcGIS software. Esri Training You can find them by going to the Training Catalog and looking for the free training options. Most of these courses can be completed in less than 2-3 hours and provide excellent information for those starting out. Cam

Geolocation through HTML5 (your web browser) is handled via the HTML5 API. If you search for HTML5 geolocation you'll find lots of additional articles and examples but the short simple answer is that the request made by your browser is brokered to the specific device (computer, laptop, tablet, phone) which is then responsible for making the best choice on how to return an accurate location using the least amount of power. You (unfortunately) don't have much visibility into how this happens. Sometimes the location is based upon your network or wireless connections. Sometimes the location is based upon your proximity to cell towers. Sometimes the location is based upon a GPS within the device. The key point is that the browser simply trusts the computer/device to 'do its best'. In your particular case if you aren't getting ANY location returned at all on your laptop at home you may have to enable location services within the browser you are using; it may have been disabled due to a privacy/security setting in the browser. You can try a different web browser (IE, FireFox, Chrome) to see if you get a different result on the same machine that isn't working. -Cam

Ahhh ... so it wasn't that IIS settings needed to change to have you access GeoEvent manager but rather that GeoEvent manager wasn't actually running! Thanks for the update Jamal Miah Cam
