The ArcGIS Server is not involved in this process, it just exists in our environment and is accessed by another application. Yes, it is IFeatureWorkspace and it references the SDE. The OpenFeatureClass call isn't that slow but we're calling it for each of our tens of layers, and it accumulates to few tens of seconds. So does a remote OpenFeatureClass should be instant as well?

I have an ArcObjects code that is checking whether a GeometryBag is intersecting with a list of feature classes (few tens of them) that are stored in SDE (everything is version 10.0). It does this by opening a FeatureClass and then calling Search on it, and then calling NextFeature on the returned cursor, and returning true or false based on its result (the GeometryBag is small, so it won't intersect with a lot of features). I'm seeing that the performance of this method isn't great, with OpenFeatureClass taking the most time. I wonder if it's reasonable that it's not fast, because OpenFeatureClass allows some advanced operations on the feature class after it's called, and whether there's a faster way of doing this in ArcObjects. We have an ArcGis Server on our environment so I guess running Query against map services exposing the needed feature classes is also a reasonable option and may be faster. Thanks.

Hello, We want to display a polygon layer as points feature layer (with a marker symbol I guess) so there's a big enough target for a map tip in any map scale, because some of the polygons are quite small. The option of duplicating the layer as a points layer in SDE obviously isn't optimal. We're using ArcGIS server 10 but if there's a better solution for 10.1 I'd like to know as well. Do you have other ideas? Thanks

Thanks again Jennifer, really useful example, but like I said in my previous post, it does few server calls for one operation so it may not be ideal for us.

Thanks for the answer Jennifer. I will try to use it but it still seems that I'm forced to put the feature layer into a map control to initialize it properly (I tried to do it without and I couldn't make it), and even if it's possible to work with it outside of a map, it seems that we have to do multiple calls to the gis server for a single operation, first initialize the layer, then add or edit features (this without the server obviously), and then save the edits. Is there anything that would allow us to simply send the features that we want to add/edit to the server? Regards, Evgeny Edit: I played with the System.Net.WebClient class a little bit today, and quite easily I was able to make a request to the rest api that worked. So even without any helpers it's ok.

Hello, From what I saw in the examples, editing is only supported on a feature layer that is currently visible on a map control (I guess opacity 0 would work, but would hurt performance). Because our geographical tables that we want to edit only contain the shapes of our entities, we don't want to display them as they are (we have database views that we display instead, with symbology based on certain attributes). We want to just send the features that we want to add/move/delete to the rest endpoint, we will handle the drawing on the map. The question is: Are there any APIs that would make it easier for us to communicate with the server (ArcGIS server 10 SP2), for example something like the internal EditTask class that is referred here? Or do we have to roll our own code that would construct http requests? We would even prefer doing the requests from our server side, so the question also applies to WPF API, or any other libraries that you could offer (: Thanks, Evgeny

Hello, I'm using silverlight api 2.1/ags server 10 and I want to have opacity sliders for the sublayers of my ArcGISDynamicMapServiceLayer . I've seen related threads like: http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/20264-set-opacity-of-sub-layer and http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/4757-Opacity-for-sublayers saying it's impossible. However in your example here: http://help.arcgis.com/en/webapi/silverlight/samples/start.htm#LegendWithTemplates there is basically a workaround of referencing all of the sublayers like this:
<esri:FeatureLayer ID="Points of Interest"
Url="http://sampleserver3.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/Fire/Sheep/MapServer/0" />
<esri:FeatureLayer ID="SubLayer2"
Url="http://sampleserver3.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/Fire/Sheep/MapServer/1" />
<esri:FeatureLayer ID="SubLayer3"
Url="http://sampleserver3.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/Fire/Sheep/MapServer/2" /> after that, we can change the LayerIDs property and have it working with opacity sliders. Is referencing a FeatureLayer that different from referencing an ArcGISDynamicMapServiceLayer? Do you think that this workaround is fine? Can you suggest other workarounds: Anything from other silverlight workarounds, to server object configuration, and even the underlying mxd. As server side workarounds I don't mean having opacity sliders, but not having of all my layers with opacity 1 - this is my biggest issue. Thanks a lot.

As I wrote in my original post, I was using the Credentials property. I checked your suggested configuration and it seems that we are already using this configuration. We are using ArcGIS server 9.3.1. Maybe it is the reason that it doesn't work?

Hello, I'm trying to display a simple map control with one dynamic layer. I started with code similar to the simplest example here: http://help.arcgis.com/en/webapi/silverlight/samples/start.htm. This code works on a sample silverlight application using silverlight API I made. The WPF application crashes with 401 error without details. If I'm setting the Credentials property to a privileged user it runs but it displays a blank screen and in the eventviewer of the server I'm seeing few success audit messages and after them a few failure audit messages from Kerberos with that message: "unknown username or bad password" and no other details. My company's network is using Windows authentication. If I'm running fiddler it works. Hope someone can help. Thanks, Evgeny

Hello, I read that the geoid is very close to the real earth shape(less than a meter off the MSL) and that it is at most 100m away from the WGS84 spheroid, then I saw such models where the MSL seems to be thousands of kilometers away from any spheroid, are those hugely exaggerated and inaccurate models or am I misunderstanding something? (from my understanding 100m shouldn't be noticeable and a good earth model should be a spheroid - almost a sphere - 22km difference between the spheroid axis shouldn't be noticeable as well). Thanks for the help. The geoid model:
