Thanks for the update. So realistically we should expect an update by the end of the year.... The development discussion of this product is an interesting one. ESRI keeps pushing ArcGIS Online and Server for web maps. Unfortunately, not all GIS users have high-speed internet, cell phone coverage, etc. In my very rural area, I'm going to be relying heavily on this free viewer to distribute GIS maps and data. Most rural areas have dial-up internet or DSL less than 3mb speeds. Pushing web maps is fine where there is infrastructure, but for those of us that have to deal with technology limitations, we still rely on these viewers. I sure hope ESRI does not stop developing a free standalone viewer, because if everything keeps getting pushed to the web and AGO, we'll have to stop using ESRI products and pursue other avenues, like open source software.

The program and map worked using Windows 8. I have my doubts about needing to update video drivers to 8.1. 8.1 was a big update, and most video card makers have been releasing updated video drivers to be compatible with 8.1. Should try it instead of just saying you doubt it would work.

I changed the compatibility to windows 7 and it still does the same thing - i have to keep task manager open and kill and restart the program several times before it will load. Each time it fails, the CPU and memory activity go up and down for like a 5 count, then all goes to 0 and it hangs.

Tried to use the msi installer but the program does not load the default world map. When to expect the next build that will work with Windows 8.1? thanks That's two different things. Assuming the msi installer actually installed the program? the default map not loading is related to video card issues. try updating the video drivers.

10.2 works fine on my 8.1 install - 4 machines and no issues. Maybe do a repair install of ArcGIS?

I remember seeing a post somewhere in this forum about another release end of 2013/early 2014, which most likely means sometime 2014 for a release. And even though ESRI is pushing online products, they aren't going to abandon desktop software. i would guess at least a couple more releases of this software.

That simple solution worked perfectly! Thanks! Found that it also works for regular ArcGIS as well. Yeah when that first started happening I thought it was a conflict between Explorer and ArcGIS since they both have that file and were both trying to connect to ArcGIS Online. But turns out that the ArcGIS Connector error happens on brand new machines with only Explorer installed. And I've tested this in virtual machines, same thing.

I've seen some hinting as to the next release of Explorer Desktop by the end of 2013. Will ESRI be changing the video requirements of this software to be more in line with other programs like google earth so the program actually runs on computers? So changing from OpenGL to DirectX rendering? To this day I laugh at how many computers run google earth just fine but have nothing but issues with Explorer desktop. If the video rendering was changed and the software ran on more computers ESRI would have more people using it. And will that annoying ArcGISOnlineConnection.exe bug be fixed as well? Any details or news of the next beta for the next version?

If you don't need access to arcgis online and are only using local data, delete the ArcGISConnectionBin.exe in the 'bin' folder. I've done this on installed and portable versions and it gets rid of that error. Pretty ridiculous that with all the testing of this latest build that ESRI didn't run into this error. Between this and the program not being able to load on most machines, its almost pointless to use this software.

I just did some more testing. First tried just the parcel layer, map and app shared publicly. set the search to do parcel ID. it worked. then tried just the parcel layer in a new map, layer, map, and app only shared only within my organization. worked again. then tried adding more layers on top of the parcel layer. parcel ID search worked again. Everything I've tried in a NEW map and NEW app has worked. It's only when I create a new app from an existing web map made a few months ago that the search doesn't work.

I just ended up deleting the ArcGISConnectionBin.exe file in the bin folder and it worked. Most likely Explorer's ArcGISConnectionBin was conflicting with ArcGIS Desktop's ArcGISConnectionBin. As for the reverting to basic mode on Win 7, there are several threads on that. you have to add some code to the settings xml file. That's much less of an issue than a constant error screen popping up.

Have you tried this? http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/61829-ERROR-ArcGIS-is-currently-not-connected-to-online-resources?p=229388&viewfull=1#post229388 None of that seemed to help for me. I'm getting the error box constantly and it won't go away. I'm assuming this is because I'm trying to run Explorer on the same desktop that I have ArcEditor installed on, so the connection error box just keeps popping up, even after choosing 'close this program'. very annoying and frustrating. this doesn't happen on machines with no esri product installed, just when there is an esri product installed then the connection thing keeps crashing.

ArcGIS Online will be Bing Maps ready at the next release, scheduled for the end of Q1 2013. At that time, customers who have an ArcGIS Online subscription will be able to input a Bing Maps key and continue to add Bing Maps to their web maps. However, customers who have an ArcGIS Online personal account will no longer be able to use Bing Maps after March 31, 2013. For both subscribers and personal account holders, web maps that already include Bing Maps will continue to function.

Mike Is there a limit to how many times one account can be logged in at the same time? For example, if there are 3 people in a County Department - rather than creating/using a unique username for each employee, what about one login for the Department that those 3 staff share? This would be for simply viewing maps and published data, not editing any layers or adding map notes. So in theory the one account could possibly be accessed from 3 different locations at the same time (1 in office, 1 at meeting, 1 in the field). Would they get some kind of error stating "too many users logged in" or anything?
