Hey Dan, just wondering if you could add further explanation of the issue you're seeing? In my testing the label remains in the centre of the polygon regardless of the data frame rotation angle.

Hi Nick, you should be able to achieve this result using feature weights, whether using the Maplex or Standard Label Engine you can assign weight values to features to discourage labels from placing over them. One can also specify an exclusion zone using weights, an area which labels will entirely avoid. If you give some more details of your problem then I can give more specific instructions.

The contour annotation tool is in the Cartography toolbox under annotation. The feature outline masks tool is in the same toolbox so hopefully you can use it.

heya, there is another way to get masks behind your contour labels. The contour annotation GP tool brings together both the creation of the annotation and the dynamic masking (masks that match the background colour). Just in case you were not aware of the tool. Nothing wrong with your method though. Sam

Unfortunately this one has me stumped too. If one enables "never remove" then the label is visible but in every other case the 1000 internal feature weight of the polygon should exclude all labels. All I can think of is to ask which exact version of ArcMap are you using, there might have been a bug which has been subsequently fixed. I am very sorry I cannot do more to help....

Heya, I would like to help you solve this problem if we can. Could you possibly post some screenshots of your data? Also what options are you using with the label engine, river or regular line labeling? River or regular polygon labeling? Maplex or standard label engine?

Hello, I have taken a look at this and can see the issue. All I can tell you is that the problem is not present at version 10.2 if that's any help.

Hello, regarding your first post, I am not sure why your annotation is uneditable. It should change according to the preview displayed in the attributes panel. If this is not the case then submit a support request to your local distributor or to ESRI Support Services, an analyst such as myself will be happy to investigate the issue with you. http://support.esri.com/en/ Regarding your second post you can use the stacking properties to align your labels. If you click the stacking options button then you can choose the alignment using the drop-down menu.

Ok sorry about the confusion. If key numbering is the only strategy that has been enabled, then if the label cannot be placed normally it will instead be placed into an index list and number placed onto the feature. I don't know what you mean by clustering apart from that would be a good example of where you will get unplaced labels. Who is your local Esri contact? I guess we could communicate to work this out. I meant that the key numbering strategy could be enabled and then if you didn't want any other strategies to affect the labels then simply do not enable any other strategies. By this I mean do not have them "checked on" in the UI. What way did you envisage using key numbering? Sam Esri

No, key numbering is always the last strategy by virtue of it's functionality. It is a rescue strategy, once all other approved strategies fail to successfully place the label it is placed into a key number list. If you want key numbering to function as the first strategy then simply apply no other strategies. Sam Esri

The functionality you are referring to is dynamic. This is the essential difference between labels and annotation. Labels can have no reference scale and redraw at every zoom-level because they are dynamic elements. Annotation is static therefore you would need to create a different annotation feature class at every scale you want to view it at. hope that helps Sam Esri
