ArcGIS Pro 3.2:

Scenario:

I've opened a geoprocessing tool from the Catalog context menu: Right-click a mobile geodatabase —> New —> View. I fill in the parameters and run the tool. The database view has been created.

Now, after reviewing the database view, I have determined I want to do a second geoprocessing operation: Register with Geodatabase.

When I go to the Geoprocessing Pane, the Create Database View tool is still open, which I suppose is expected. I want to search for the Register with Geodatabase tool, so I hit the Back button. However, hitting  Back opens the Catalog Pane, whereas I was expecting it to bring me back to the home GP search screen in the GP Pane.

I think I understand why it's behaving that way. The Create Database View tool was originally opened via right-clicking in the Catalog Pane. So, the previous pane is technically the Catalog Pane, not the GP Pane. However, some time has passed since that action was performed, and I don't want to go back to the Catalog Pane (I've forgotten I was ever there). And I don't need "help" getting back there. I simply want to go back to the GP Pane home screen so that I can use a different GP tool.

In other words, I find it fiddly to hit Back in the GP Pane, but be led elsewhere.

Could that behaviour be changed?

You hit the nail on the head with how you explained the back button. The back button will return you back to the last pane that had focus. If that was the catalog pane, that's where it will take you.  This is a newer feature in ArcGIS Pro that was implemented at 3.2 in response to users requests.

If you're looking for a direct route to the GP pane, I recommend using the 'Open Another Tool' option in the upper right-hand menu of any open GP tool.

What I'm hearing from this Idea is that a dedicated button, that is more obvious and easily accessible, might be a good enhancement to the GP tool framework.  Would that get at the root of this idea better?

Yes, that sounds like a good idea. Thanks.

Should I rename this idea to something like this? "Easy navigation from an open GP tool (via Catalog) to the GP pane home"

Or something better?

Sure!  I think there are multiple ways you can get to a GP tool, so specifying catalog may be unnecessarily limiting. Maybe "Single-click navigation from GP tool to GP pane"

Hello Bud and All,

here's the idea that led to the current behavior: https://community.esri.com/t5/arcgis-pro-ideas/geoprocessing-quot-back-quot-arrow-should-return/idi-....

It's unlikely that what currently is be changed back. Let me point out a possible solution you may not be aware of: Open Another Tool on the GP Pane...

BBicking1_0-1703106376477.png

It opens the Toolboxes view of the GP Pane with access to all tools. At the same time it  keeps track of the open tools and informs you of the count with that number...

To return to any of the open tools, click the Open Another Tool button...

From the dropDown access and manage the open tools in the list, and open additional ones. The list is only maintained for the duration of the session.

It'll be great to hear if that's a workable solution for you.

@BBicking1 What is meant by the word “Another” in that context?

  • Additional tool
  • Different tool
  • Either additional or different

I’ve always found that word to be rather ambiguous (in the English language in general):

Additional tool, if one is already open, like in your case.
One tool needs to be open for the option the be active.

Different tool from the one currently open, as your case suggests.

It can also be the same tool multiple times with different parameter settings.

In SUM: Another tool.
