I have had problems with file geodatabases. Data will not display at certain scales, and I have layers set to be shown at all scales. This has been a problem with multiple file geodatbases, which does not happen in personal geodatbases. I also find it useful to work with data tables in Access, since Arcview/ArcCatalog are very restrictive in editing tables.

why can't I create valid polygons
reply from Rebecca Strauch in Mapping - View the full discussionJames, I didn't see what version you are running, but I wonder if you are hitting the limitation of the personal geodatabase (which is based on Access and does have limitations)? That might be why after three successful adds it has problems. I would recommend using a File geodatabase which is a much more robust format, and is supported moving forward. Five reasons why you should be using the File Geodatabase | ArcGIS Blog If you need help setting a file GDB up, this is the help from 10.2 ArcGIS Help (10.2, 10.2.1, and 10.2.2) it is similar in previous versions, but you can search in the help if this version doesn't work for you. I hope that helps.
