why can't I create valid polygons

I have a personal geodatabase polygon feature class. I started and edit session, created several features. I tried to create another feature and no matter what I do it doesn't work. Only creates empty geometry, i.e. shape_length and shape_area fields are zero. Did not change coordinate system, not going out of bounds, why is this happening???? SO SICK OF ESRI GARBAGE!!!!!!!

I've been using 'ESRI garbage' for over 25 years; never had a problem creating a polygon.  I make a darn good living with ESRI products as well.  Perhaps you can cool your jets long enough to provide some additional information and we may be able to better assist you.

That should just about do it....

In ArcCatalog, go into the feature class properties. Delete and recreate the spatial index. Fixes some random geometry problems.

HI

Thanks, I tried this, I think It made it worse? But looking at it the porblem may be that I'm in a data frame and most other feature classes are NAD27, my class is NAD83, so may be a problem with transformation. But I don't undetstand why I created 3 features no problem, and is suddenly stopped working. I'll try reproduceing the class in NAD237 and see how that works. thanks!

Hi James,

What is the coordinate system you are using?

You could try Repair Geometry.

State plane NAD83, though my frame and most other layers in the map are NAD27 so that might be the problem, I'm going to try recreating the class in NAD27? thansk for your help

James, I didn't see what version you are running, but I wonder if you are hitting the limitation of the personal geodatabase (which is based on Access and does have limitations)?  That might be why after three successful adds it has problems.

I would recommend using a File geodatabase which is a much more robust format, and is supported moving forward.

Five reasons why you should be using the File Geodatabase | ArcGIS Blog

If you need help setting a file GDB up, this is the help from 10.2 ArcGIS Help (10.2, 10.2.1, and 10.2.2)   it is similar in previous versions, but you can search in the help if this version doesn't work for you.

I hope that helps.

I have had problems with file geodatabases. Data will not display at certain scales, and I have layers set to be shown at all scales. This has been a problem with multiple file geodatbases, which does not happen in personal geodatbases. I also find it useful to work with data tables in Access, since Arcview/ArcCatalog are very restrictive in editing tables.

Unfortunately, there are several warnings indicating that editing feature classes in Access is risky and may corrupt the geodatabase, such as: http://support.esri.com/cn/knowledgebase/techarticles/detail/31599

James,

Just for testing purpose would you mind exporting out your feature class from the existing personal geodatabase to a new personal geodatabase  and then perform some edits. I would like to see if it retains your edits with proper shape area and without 'null' geometry. However, as Rebecca suggested File geodatabase is a native file format of Esri with a lot of capabilities. I would work with a file geodatabase instead of a personal geodatabase. Thanks!
